Born and raised in northern Vermont, Justin left a successful career in stage lighting in New York City to study brewing. He graduated the American Brewers Guild Class in 2008 and joined Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. in 2009, working his way up from packaging technician to shift brewer to experimental brewer, head of R&D.
Justin has designed and executed hundreds of unique recipes, as well as collaborating with dozens of bars, restaurants, and breweries. He focuses on using local and exotic grains, hops, fruits, vegetables, and spices.
While leading sour beer production at Captain Lawrence, Justin aged, blended, and packaged dozens of barrel-aged sour beers including Cuvee de Castleton, Rosso e Marrone, the Hudson Valley Harvest series, and the Barrel Select series.
Justin has brewed beer around the world, notably with Gorilla Brewing Company and Galmegi Brewing Company, both in Busan, South Korea. He was invited to speak at the Great Korean Beer Festival and is believed by some to have brewed the highest-ABV craft beer in Korea.
As Visiting Brewer at the Carey Institute for Global Good, Justin has worked closely with New York grain and hops farmers to strengthen the New York supply chain and increase understanding between brewers and farmers in the state.
You’ll find Justin at Fin and Brew on Friday evenings, eating oysters and Brussels sprouts, and drinking an OD Beets cocktail. Let him know what you think of the beer!
